Clinical case

Mobile cervical prosthesis

The patient, a 53-year-old man, came to the clinic due to intense pain in the cervical spine with positive brachialgia (pain) and paresthesias (cramps) in the right arm. This situation does not improve with medication or rehabilitative treatment. When rotating the head and neck, the patient also experiences pain.

The objective examination result reflects inflammation of the supraspinatus tendon with rotation abnormality and partial labral injury. On the other hand, the cervical spine MRI shows three cervical disc herniations and degenerative changes at the C4-C5, C5-C6 and C6-C7 levels.

After having tried all types of medical-rehabilitative treatments, the ICAC team decides on a intervention using a minimally invasive technique and reconstruction of the three cervical discs with a mobile prosthesis. The operation is a success and the results are immediately noticeable.

In less than 5 hours the patient recovers from the operation. Likewise, mobilization of the neck begins from the first moment and no collar or other immobilizers are required.

Finally, the patient is discharged from the hospital the day after the operation.
